Pualani Smith has taught first grade for 9 years at Lewis and Clark Elementary in Caroline County. Her passion for learning led her to pursue a career in teaching where she could encourage the same love within her students. During her time as a stay-at-home mom, she received her Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Western Governors University. Her love for technology usage in the classroom drove her to later receive her Masters of Education in Learning and Technology. Mrs. Smith’s knowledge in technology and dedication helped her school successfully navigate the year of virtual learning during the pandemic.

Mrs. Smith is a member of Kappa Delta Pi and is active in her school and community. She has  served on her school’s Parent Teacher Association for 9 years and has functioned as teacher liaison for 8 of those years.  She also serves as chair of their science committee, successfully hosting the second annual STEM Fair. Mrs. Smith was nominated for her school’s Teacher of the Year during the 2019-2020 school, won Lewis and Clark Teacher of the Year during the 2020-2021 school year, and then was nominated again during the 2022-2023 school year for her school.

Q&A with Ms. Smith:

Why did you get into teaching?

"I wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. However, a lack of confidence in myself prevented me from pursuing that dream. When I became a mother to my own two children, I realized I needed to show them that it was possible to become what you wanted to be. I became a teacher because I needed to show them how important following your dreams is and that it was never too late to make it happen."

What inspires you?

"My family, friends, and community drive me to be the best teacher and person I can be. I love being a part of the daily “village” in my students’ lives and being able to connect with them throughout the school year. Seeing my students overcome all the different challenges their lives may hold inspires me to take the challenges teaching holds head on."

What would you say is special about teaching in Virginia?

"Virginia is filled with so much history! Our country started right here on the ground we walk every day. I love being able to show my students the amazing places we have, the inspiring people from our beautiful state, and talking to them about the incredible things that have happened throughout the history of our nation."
