Title: Reading Specialists
Reports To: Principal
FLSA Status: Exempt
Summary: To plan, coordinate and monitor school intervention and remediation programs in reading for elementary students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Serves as a resource in the area of reading for teachers, paraprofessionals, and other members of the educational community at the elementary school.
2. Collaborates with other reading specialists to develop a strong literacy plan based on classroom needs, teacher content knowledge and student assessments.
3. Coordinates the use of reading assessments.
4. Plans, coordinates and monitors school intervention and remediation programs in reading, including iStation and Read 180.
5. Coordinates intensive remediation for below, on-grade and above grade level students based on assessment data.
6. Works with reading specialists to develop a calendar to analyze data with staff on a regular basis.
7. Coordinates with reading specialists to interpret and communicate the use of data for instructional decisions based on scientifically-based reading research.
8. Assists in implementing and monitoring the scientifically-based core reading program.
9. Provides assessment and monitoring data to the principal that support all reading activities.
10. Provides small group and individual remediation for Tier III students as needed based on data.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
1. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment and Reading Specialist endorsement.
2. Master’s Degree preferred in reading.
3. At least five years teaching experience in the primary grades
4. Knowledge and skills related to scientifically based reading research and its implementation
6. Demonstrated success in implementing student achievement
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and hold a valid certification to meet State requirements with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.

Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
Seeing to read, prepare and review various materials.
Sitting for extended periods of time.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ten-month employment. Salary to be determined by the School Board. Grant Funded. Salary to be determined by the funds available.
EVALUATION
Performance of the position will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Prince Edward County School Board’s policy on evaluation of professional personnel.
