POSITION INFORMATION:
           

Location(s): Elementary School, Hampton, VA Supervisors: Building Principal & Language Arts Curriculum Leader Employment Period:  10 Months Employment Status:  Full-time Start Date: August 2023 Salary: Teacher scale -- commensurate with experience



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
           

This position is assigned to a school and is responsible for serving as a literacy expert by fulfilling roles in the areas of leadership, assessment and instruction.  Builds and monitors a comprehensive literacy program at the designated school. Formalizes plans, aligned with the master schedule, to use literacy support personnel effectively.  Develops and implements instruction to meet the needs of struggling readers. Provides job embedded professional development support to build a capacity for teachers to implement appropriate language arts instruction.

 

  • – Serves as a member of the school literacy team to develop a schoolwide reading plan.
  • – Collaborates with school administrators to develop and monitor the schoolwide reading program, which includes personnel, time, curriculum materials and assessments.
  • – Collaborates with teachers to guide planning for instruction.
  • – Provides job-embedded professional development support to classroom teachers through classroom visits, constructive feedback, modeling, co-planning, and co-teaching.
  • – Facilitates literacy meetings with diverse groups (parents, teachers, administrators, tutors).
  • – Develops an action plan to identify needs, develop measurable goals, and organize action steps strategically.
  • – Uses data to plan differentiated lessons.
  • – Plans and delivers professional development according to the needs of the school.
  • – Works collaboratively with a variety of school staff and supervisors.
  • – Delivers intervention lessons directly to students.
  • – Models research-based best practices for instruction.
  • – Incorporates all of the components of literacy into instruction (reading, word study, writing).
  • – Facilitates the implementation and management of district and state reading assessments and programs.
  • – Uses a variety of data (such as DRA, PALS, quarterly benchmarks, SOLs, etc.) to plan instruction and intervention.
  • – Collects, interprets, analyzes, and monitors a variety of student performance data.
  • – Demonstrates expertise in the use of assessment and screening measures (formal and informal) for language development and proficiency.
  • – Guides teachers in the analysis of assessment data and facilitates instructional adjustments accordingly.  
  • – Trains classroom teachers on the administration of division assessments.
  • – Collects and monitors intervention documentation to ensure that all identified students are served.
  • – Attends professional development activities to improve/maintain knowledge of reading skills and remediation practices.
  • – Keeps abreast of development, research, and new technology in the field.
  • – Complies with school and school board policies and regulations.
  • – Builds relationships with parents, school staff and community representatives.
  • – Meets timelines.
  • – Ensures a safe, orderly learning environment.
  • – Performs other duties as assigned by the principal.


JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • – Master's degree in Reading required and three years of successful teaching experience in which the teaching of reading was an important responsibility.
  • – Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement as a Reading Specialist. 
  • – Must possess an in-depth knowledge and expertise in literacy, instructional best practices and differentiated instruction.
  • – Ability to communicate effectively and clearly with others both in writing and verbally.
  • – Ability to establish and maintain relationships with teachers and administrators, as well as collaborate with diverse personalities.
  • – Expertise in current assessment practices.
  • – Knowledge of and experience with word study.
  • – Understanding of the five components of literacy (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension).
  • – Ability to inspire building-wide passion for literacy.
